Bowmanville River Valley Conservation
After visiting Pigeon River on a beautiful sunny spring day, we decided to continue on to Bowmanville Creek to show the kids the steelhead run, where the steelhead come from Lake Ontario to spawn. It was only the second day of trout season, so there were lots of fishermen. I used to come here when I was a young adult, to go fishing all the time, but have not been here for awhile. They have done a lot of work to accommodate hiking and cycling.
We crossed a bridge that crosses the Bowmanville Creek, which was new since I was here last. On the other side was two long flights of stairs, which lead to the top of the hillside, where you could get a beautiful view of the river valley.
We came back down the stairs and walked alongside the river, until we came to the dam. Here we could see the steelhead swimming above the dam and below the dam. The kids were excited to be able to see the fish swimming.
On the way back, we walked on the new paved cycling path which was also new since the last time I had been here.
Bowmanville is a short distance from Oshawa, and is a great place to go too, to get away from the city. I would recommend Bowmanville Valley Creek to anyone wishing to take a short picnic trip. There are picnic tables near the parking lot, but there are no facilities at this time.
