Enniskillen Conservation Area
Trail Map / Brochure
Enniskillen Conservation Area is located just a short drive from Oshawa in the head waters of the Bowmanville river. This is a beautiful area with boardwalks and bridges crossing the river everywhere. There is a covered picnic area at the main parking lot and washrooms are near by.
We visited Eniskillen on a cold windy day in May in search of some geocaches. There are 2 hidden in Enniskillen but we only managed to find 1. I just started geocaching and I have quickly become addicted to finding these hidden treasures in the wilderness using a GPS. It seems every hiking trail i visit has at least 1 cache hidden somewhere.
There are 3 km of hiking trails here which makes Enniskillen Conservation Area a great destination for someone looking to do a short hike through beautiful cedar forest while crossing over an upper tributary of the Bowmanville Creek several times.
There are ferns and fiddle heads everywhere in the marshy ground beside all the boardwalks. They are so beautiful growing wild like this. There are also some trillium flowers still present but not as many as in other conservation areas that I have visited this time of year.
In spring steelhead or rainbow trout can be seen in the bowmanville river on their annual spawning migration. Fishing is permitted in the area after the last Saturday in April. I'm not sure so don't quote me on this but it also looks like really good brook trout waters.
Over all I would rate Enniskillen Conservation Area a 5 out of 5 and a wonderful spot for the entire family.
