The Ganaraska Forest is located between highway 115 and county road 9 to the north of the town of Kendal. The Ganaraska Conservation Authority claims it is Ontario's largest forest. Located within an hour's drive of Toronto, straddling the Counties of Northumberland, Peterborough, Victoria and the Region of Durham, and offers the best in outdoor recreation. This is not far from the truth.
The Ganaraska Forest is kind of like Algonquin park except Algonquin is all about canoeing and hiking were as the Ganaraska Forest is about hiking, Bicycling, 4 wheeling, and horse back riding. There are also some really good cross country skiing trails and snowmobiling trails in winter.
There are 3 sections to the Ganaraska Forest. A west, central, and east sections. there are several access points to the forest but in all situations it is necessary to visit the main central section to pick up a permit before you use the forest. Permits are very affordable for hiking, just $5 per person for day use or you can purchase a season pass for $25.
In the east section were we visited first we walked trough some fabulous pine plantations. In 1947, the first trees were planted on 640 hectares (1,580 acres) .
