Long Ontario Winter

Well it's been a long winter here in Ontario and quite some time since I have wrote here.

I almost threw in the towel and called it quits on the internet. I was all set to not renew the domain www.ontario-hiking.com even thou hiking is still and always will be my passion the internet world is becoming too time consuming and frustrating for me. My whole outlook towards my internet business has changed.

Any way I'm still here, and I look forwards to this summer. Hopefully I can get out and add some new content to the site. We have been seeing 20 or more unique visitors daily which is pretty damn good for such a small target subject area. The site is only of interest to people living in Ontario or looking to travel to Ontario. That restricts the amount of searches coming from Google and or Yahoo.

Lately while visiting the site I have noticed a couple of errors on the main page that I need to clean up and my geocaching page is a mess and needs an over haul. We still have a couple of feet of snow on the grounds so I can work on cleaning these up until it gets warmer outside.

I did manage a couple winter hike this year along with several trip's to Ken Reid of course. Saturday we traveled to the Durham forest just southeast of Goodwood. The trails were well used and packed down which made walking easier. We also went to Emily forest north of Omemee.

Algonquin is also only one month away. Hopefully I will get out before then.

Later
Tom.

Maple Sugar At Purple Woods

Yesterday was a bright sunny Sunday so we decided to get out of the house and take in a maple sugar festival at the Purple Woods Conservation Area between Oshawa and Port Perry.

After that we decided to take a look at the Durham forest located just south of Uxbridge. This area is huge much like the Ganaraska forest and we need to visit more in the summer.

Rouge river valley

I finally made it back down to the Rouge river valley and I was totally blown away on a record breaking day in January were the temperature was in the low teens.

The Rouge valley is a spectacular chunk of wilderness so close to metropolitan Toronto you wouldn't believe it. If you want to know just how close it is, The metro Toronto Zoo is actually part of the Rouge park.

Look for a special feature on the Rouge very soon.

Lake Scugog Geocaching

Yesterday I took the kids and the dog on a trip around Scugog lake and onto the Scugog Island to several geocaches. We visited 4 in all. I wanted to visit at least 3 more on the west side of the lake but during the 3rd geocach on Scugog Island Zoi our dog decided to roll in a dead fish. She stunk so bad the kids just wanted to get home as soon as possible. All in all the weather was great and we had a good day. I cant wait to get out and do another geocaching trip.

Ganaraska Forest

Yesterday I took my kids on a hike through the Ganaraska Forest. Wow what great hiking spot. It's also a snowmobile's and ATV'ers paradise with trails criss crossing everywhere. There were also all kinds of people horse back riding on the trails. It was amazing to see so many people using the trails for so many different activities. The trails are also used for cross country skiing in the winter.

Home From Sauble Beach

Well we finally made it home from a great trip to the Bruce Peninsula and Sauble Beach area. Our site at Sauble Falls Provincial Park turned out to be better than I expected.

I managed to visit 3 conservation areas. Pottawatomi, Bruce's Caves and Ingles Falls. Didn't get to Indian River Conservation area, but the 3 we did visit, were amazing.

I now have about 180 pictures to go through on my digital camera. I will be adding 4 new pages to the site very soon.
