Walter Bean Kaufmans Flats Trail

Trail Map

The Kaufmans Flats trail is part of the Walter bean trail and is an excellent place to get away from the city but still be in the city, so it takes very little time to actually get here from Kitchener, waterloo or the surrounding area. Kaufmans Flats are located on the east side of Waterloo just off University Ave E. before you get to Rim Park .

Walter Bean was a business and community leader who believed in contributing to the welfare of area residents. He championed the vision of a public hiking trail along the Grand River. Following Walter's death, his many friends took up his challenge and in 1998 formed The Walter Bean Grand River Community Trails Foundation. To make his vision a reality, this non-profit fundraising corporation has partnered with the cities of Cambridge, Kitchener, Waterloo and the Township of Woolwich to build and maintain a recreational trail.

Just after crossing the bridge we were rewarded with the sight of a baby raccoon. It was really cool seeing baby raccoons in the wild like that. We also saw a squirrel scurrying across the forest floor. Squirrels are very common here and it didn't surprise me to see one here.

As we continued along the trail we came across a pair of Mennonite ladies taking in the afternoon sun and having a picnic lunch beside the Grand River. St Jacobs and Ontario's largest Mennonite community surrounds the Waterloo area.

A little further there is a natural spring at the bottom of the hill coming out of a pipe. I have heard that it has been tested and is drinkable but I wouldn't recommend it unless you boil it first or have it tested for yourself to be sure.
