Walter Bean Grand River Trail

Grand Valley Trails (GVT) – Section to the right of Waterloo Regional Rd 52(Bridge St) Just outside of Kitchener (North of Breslau) By Denise Worsley

The Grand Valley Trails start at Lake Erie at the Rock Point Provincial Park close to Cayuga and finishes in Alton 253.6km later. The section we decided on this particular spring day was diverse enough to keep the kids occupied with different landscapes and such.

We followed a creek down the edge of a warm bronze meadow. Boat races entertained all of us! The brown grass lay in heaps as we crunched through it with our eyes only on our makeshift boat that may have been a stick or large leaf. Later in the season the grass will rise green and high over our heads!

Further down we find a single evergreen tree decorated with Christmas bulbs! This may seem a little out of place but the kids get a kick out of redecorating it! After pulling them away from the tree we continue down the path to cross over the creek and find ourselves in a deciduous forest. A large tree crossing the creek cries out to be explored! Later we emerge from the forest to continue our walk on the earth pathway. It takes us through some shrubs and find the odd flower not quite so wild! I think it’s a double daffodil what a thrill! Some squirrel must have transplanted the neighbouring farmer’s bulbs. Out of the shrubs and into another meadow. The trail takes us along the edge bordering the forest. Into the forest we find a few wildflowers. The season hasn’t matured enough for the White Trillium but we find a single dog-tooth violet (trout lily). They are commonly found in deciduous forests.

The trek back wasn’t as entertaining as going in. We managed to see another family taking advantage of the high creek in spring. They had their nets raised and were searching for the perfect spot to grab mud wriggling with life!
