Rouge River Valley Park Woodlands Park

The Woodlands Park section of the Rouge valley was our first stop of the day in the area. At first glance it appeared to be a wide open area perfect for summertime picnics, walking the dog, playing Frisbee, and whatever else you can think of. But as I walked the trails I eventually wandered into some remarkable wooded areas on the banks of the Rouge River.

The river was crystal clear at this time of year and it made me think of the spring steelhead run. What a beautiful spot to go fishing. I can just imagine how busy this spot would be the last weekend in April. this stretch of river is actually the beginning of what is called the Little Rouge River.

The woodlands park appears to be fairly new. But the entire Rouge Park is only 10 years old. The Rouge watershed is 337 square kilometers in size. Its headwater source areas are found in the Oak Ridges Moraine, and it drains into Lake Ontario. The Rouge water- shed is situated within the south-central portion of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and specifically lies within the City of Scarborough and the Towns of Markham, Pickering, Richmond Hill and Whitchurch-Stouffville
